What is Penile Curvature Surgery?

It is a deformity that develops as a result of the disproportionate growth of structures in the penis area in men. Since this situation brings with it erection problem and pain, it can lead to physical, social and psychological problems such as sexual dysfunctions, decreased quality of life, restlessness and damage to self-confidence. Due to all these problems, this procedure is frequently preferred by many people and very successful results are obtained.

Causes of Penile Curvature?

This problem may be congenital or may occur later due to genetics, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, previous prostate surgery, compulsive movements or trauma. Lentil or chickpea-sized nodules may occur with cressing of bleeding foci that develop due to circulatory disorder or trauma in the vascular structure of the penis, which ensures erection. As a result of the transformation of these nodules into a hard connective tissue, deformities occur in the penis.

After the age of 40, this problem occurs more frequently, but it can rarely be seen in some patients at younger ages for developmental reasons. If it is formed at a young age, it can manifest itself more painfully.

Penile Curvature Symptoms?

Symptoms may vary depending on the location of the fibrotic connective tissue (calcification) that usually causes the disease. Generally, the following symptoms occur:

Curvature in the shape of the penis
Painful infections
Difficulty in sexual intercourse
Decreased sexual desire (libido)
Reduction of penis size
Erection problem
Difficulty maintaining an erection

How to Treat Penile Curvature?

Colored US is performed to detect the degree of penile curvature, calcification or tissue blood supply. The penis should be evaluated during an erection, so preferably the patient may be asked to take a photograph while it is erect. If there is an erection problem, an erection can be achieved by vacuum or injection into the penis in the clinic. When the curvature first starts, close to 50% recovery can be achieved with drug therapy or injection.

If the symptoms still persist 3-6 months after the diagnosis and there is no improvement in drug therapy, surgical treatment should be started. Especially if the patient's penis has a curvature of more than 30 degrees, and if there is difficulty in sexual intercourse and pain complaints, surgical treatment can be applied immediately. Although many patients do not have such complaints, they want to have their deformity corrected due to aesthetic concerns.

Two different surgical treatment methods are applied. Correction can be made by making an incision on the opposite side of the curvature and suturing. If there is a further curvature, the nodule on the curved side is removed and a graft (patch) obtained from the leg tissue is used instead. Congenital curvatures are usually seen when the urinary hole is not in its anatomically normal place.

All these problems can be easily solved with surgical treatment at a rate of 90-95%. Surgical time varies between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

Points to Consider After Penile Curvature Surgery?

The hospital stay is 1-2 days. One week later, the patient is checked.
Oral feeding can be started 4-6 hours after the operation.
The surgical area is covered with a bandage. In the early period, there may be mild swelling and redness at the surgical site. It is important to keep this area clean and dry at all times. Your doctor will tell you when you can take a shower.
As long as you stay in the hospital, your medication and pain control are provided.
Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 6 weeks.
If discharge, bleeding and swelling occur in the suture area after discharge from the hospital, you should consult your doctor immediately.
