Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Menopause Symptoms

The term menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstruation as a result of loss of ovarian follicular activity. Menopause is diagnosed after twelve consecutive months of amenorrhea in the absence of any other obvious pathological or physiological cause. Menopause occurs generally in most of women between ages 45 and 52 years due to hormonal status. Along with the decrease of estrogen level during menopause stage; women experience some symtops such as sweating, hot flush, anxiety, depression, attention problems, vaginal dryness, sexual dysfunction, urogenital atrophy, dyspareunia, muscle and joint pain, uterine bleeding, urinary incontinence, sleep problems, fertility loss, defect in body image, cardiovascular system disorders, and osteoporosis.

In the conducted several studies; it is stated that hormone replacement treatments (HRT) used in the management of menopause symptoms have an important clinical role however due to their complex biological effects and their limited benefits against side effects, they are not preferred by most of women. The Women’s Health Initiative report, it has associated HRT with an increased risk for breast cancer and thromboembolism. The long period of time spent by women who are adversely affected by menopausal health problems and the decrease in their quality of life make other treatment options inevitable. Initiatives to increase postmenopausal women’s life quality are also valuable in reducing the burden on public health costs.

In the recent years, women prefer complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods, which they believe that they are safer and natural in order to relieve menopause complaints and improve life quality. These alternative methods are preferred by women to alleviate menopausal complaints.
